The celebrations will go on until Friday.

The events organised for the celebration include a religious talk on Thursday on city lifestyle and Islam Hadhari.

Former deputy state secretary Datuk Mat Razali Kassim will become the city's first mayor while the Kuala Terengganu Municipal Council will be upgraded to become a city council.

Mat Razali will take his oath of office before the Regent of Terengganu at Istana Maziah.

The new city will also be known as the “Waterfront Heritage City”.

With Kuala Terengganu assuming city status, the state government hopes to attract more investors and tourists.

The town has long been known as a sleepy hallows and has been lagging behind other major towns in terms of development.

When Kuala Terengganu became a city, there might be a lot of project expected in near future to attract more visitor to Terengganu. Menteri Besar Terengganu must be the key person to make sure that 'The Visit Terengganu Year 2008' successful.
